War movies with the wrong tanks annoy the shit out of me. The film “The Battle Of The Bulge”? Why the fuck was everyone using Vietnam-era tanks? The war film “The Big Red One”? German SS Panzer divisions driving Sherman M4s? Fucking what?…
To the OP, I do want to point out two things, A) the movie, if its the one i think it is, would be made in 1965, so there are still a good amount of surplus M4s if I’m not mistaken, and B) Do remember that the German war machine was dieing out, so they had to use what they could, even if its the enemy tanks. The Aussies did the same with the Italian tanks during the N. Africa Campaign even if they were generally as useful as shit on a hot day…. come to think of it, i bet it would smell just as bad.
Point is, there is some feasibility to it, you just have to think practically from to perspective of the German Panzer Divisions.
Fair point. But in “The Big Red One” though I do seem to remember our plucky American heroes going up against an elite SS panzer division which would have been given priority in Panzer supply. Also there is no way any German Panzer crew would have accepted to crew the ‘Tommy Cooker’ Sherman tank. :)
I can understand The Big Red One point, but if you were a tanker and you had a choice between becoming a ground unit or a M4, something tells me that a Sherman would look real nice lol
